Help! I Hafta Do a Project:
Science Fair Tips for Kids, Grades 1-6

So, you don't want to build another baking soda volcano, but you don't know how to extract DNA. How can you perform a winning science fair project?
  • Choose a topic you'll really, really enjoy. Not something that sounds easy or that your parents or teachers want you to do. Do you like video games? Animals? Food? These are areas just full of questions to investigate.
  • Make sure you do a project and not just a report. A project involves more than just finding out information. You need to experiment - to test a question you have and make a guess about what you think will happen (hypothesis.)
  • Use the Scientific Method. This is not hard when you break it down:
    1. Ask a question.
    2. Get information about your question. What do you need to know to answer it?
    3. Guess what you think will happen. What do you think the answer to your question will be? This is known as your hypothesis.
    4. Test your guess (through experimentation).
    5. Make conclusions based on the results of that testing.

This guide for students, Grades 7-12 includes:

  • Nitty-gritty details about the process, from selecting a topic to competing at the fair, and everything in between.
  • Common mistakes students make and how to avoid them.
  • Detailed instructions for building your own backboard.
  • Tips on what judges look for from a science fair judge!
